Being afraid of surprises, we become risk-averse, and our response can be that of “I will give it some thought and get back to you.” Is this disengagement or trying to stay relevant? My guess is disengagement since there is no timeline attached, like in two weeks? The other possibility is to escape into our comfort zone until one is sure. But, even if you were to move forward with certain guarantees, life is full of surprises, and often we do not see it coming. Ideally, surprises should be handled rationally and not emotionally charged or faith-based. In case you forget, remember this drill when you go for a jog ” 1,2,3, 4,5 6, 7 all good rational thinkers go to heaven.” If rational, emotional, and faith-based are the shuffled deck, we do not know precisely if one of the three is better than the other two. On the other hand, if we have a growth mindset, surprises can throw challenges with growth potential. So, if you are ambitious, remember the three; however, stick to one that best works for you. No one has mastered the pecking order yet in the shuffled deck; however, having a coach has a fine-tune partner can bring much-needed clarity.
